See the best sites of both medieval and modern Tallinn in just a few hours. Starting with a drive through the beautiful suburbs of Tallinn, followed by an exploration, on foot, of the centuries old buildings, hidden courtyards and fortifications of the charming Old Town.

Your tour begins from the cruise port with the drive to Kadriorg Park, noted for its beautiful grounds and an 18th century baroque palace, originally the summer home of the Russian Czar, Peter the Great. A short stroll in the park will allow you to view the uniquely shaped KUMU Art Museum, and the palace residence of our current president.

The next stop will be at the famous Song Festival Grounds where the singing revolution was born and where over 25,000 singing voices of a mass choir continue to echo the spirit of this nation every 5 years in massive song festivals. Your drive continues on to the coastal district of Pirita, with its attractive pine forest park, beach and yachting center built for the 1980 Olympic Games. The ruins of the15th century St Bridget’s Convent add a sharp and interesting contrast to the the newer buildings in this district.

The driving portion of the tour concludes on Toompea Hill in the upper section of the old town where you will continue on foot to enjoy a magnificent panoramic view of the city and the sea. This UNESCO world heritage town is still surrounded by much of it’s original fortifications with an abundance of charming medieval architecture within. Discover the 13th-century St. Mary’s (Dome) Cathedral and the Alexander Nevsky Cathedral before heading down to the lower section of the old town.  Here you will find the only preserved medieval Gothic Town Hallin the entire Baltic and Scandinavian region, the oldest continuously functioning pharmacy in the world and many other architectural treasures.

At the end of the tour you can decide to stay in Old Town or return to cruise port. If you decide to stay in town, your guide will give you simple directions to get back to the cruise port which is only a 15 to 20 minute walk away and will be happy to suggest the best places to buy authentic locally made handicrafts.

When you return to cruise port, you have an option to do the shopping in themarket inside the cruise terminal which consists of 25-30 small shops. There is a very good choice of handicraft available directly from local producers and prices are even lower than in the Old Town.

Step into our captivating world heritage site with its maze of cobblestone streets and medieval buildings. The heart of the city (indeed, when viewed from the air,Tallinn’s old town is shaped like a heart) is alive with activity and culture, influenced by centuries of tradition.

Your local tour guide will greet you on the cruise harbor and lead you to the Great Coastal Gate and Fat Margaret’s Tower, the coastal entrance to the lower part of the old town. Much of the fortified town wall and lookout towers still remain standing as witnesses to past sieges and battles, each having their own remarkable stories to tell.

As you proceed along the main trading street during the medieval period, you will be intrigued by the elaborate decorative elements carved into the facades of thegreat Guild Houses. See the tallest spire in the world at the time of it’s construction which belongs to St Olav’s church and Tallinn’s only fortress church, Niguliste, founded by German merchants in the 13th century.

The centrally located Town Hall Square, still a vibrant gathering place for many cultural events held throughout the year, is home to the only preserved medievalgothic Town Hall in the Baltic and Scandinavian region. Here you will also find one of the oldest continuously functioning pharmacies in the world. From the lower town, your ascent up Pikk Jalg street leads you to Toompea castle where past overlords once ruled the city and is now home to the Estonian Parliamentand many foreign embassies. Toompea hill offers a magnificent panoramic view of the surrounding lower city which unfolds like a fairytale picture book before your eyes.

A visit inside the Cathedral of St Mary’s (Dome church), which took over two centuries to complete resulting in an unusual mix of architectural styles, reveals an elaborate collection of funeral coats of arms and burial stones dating back to the 13th century. See the most opulent Orthodox church in Tallinn, theAlexander Nevsky Cathedral which was built as a symbol of Russian dominance over an unruly Baltic territory.

Returning to the lower town, your guide will show you a small charming street named Catherine’s Passage where many of the workshops of local artists and craftsmen are located. After the tour ends you may wish to return to this area to do some more browsing or shopping. We continue on to the vibrant Viru street, the main pedestrian artery into the Old Town and conclude our tour at the prominent Viru Gates, your time tunnel back to the 21st century.

At the end of the tour, your guide will leave you with simple directions back to the cruise port which is only a 15 to 20 minute walk away and will be happy to suggest the best places to experience ethnic food and buy authentic handicrafts. Capital of Latvia situated by the Daugava river is not only the biggest city of the country but also one of the biggest and oldest in northern Europe. In 1997 UNESCO declared Riga’s historical centre a World Heritage Site. Today this area on the right bank of Daugava is the heart of the city and very popular tourist destination. During our tour you will discover all its highlights and experience fantastic atmosphere of this relatively small and compact quarter of Riga.Our guide will meet you at the harbour and from there you will take a very short walk to the Old Town. We will show you there one of the most beautiful buildings in the city – Latvian National Opera House constructed in 19th century and unique building ofHouse of the Blackheads with fantastic ornaments reconstructed in late 1990s. Of course we will not miss one of the oldest monuments – Riga Castle which was founded in 1330. Another important site on our way will be Dome Cathedral well known for its size and large pipe organ. You will also see defensive town walls with Powder Tower and Swedish Gate, building of Latvian Parliament, St Peter’s Church (one of the symbols of Riga), the Freedom Monument and many others sites with interesting architecture and long history.After the tour you can have some free time in the centre and come back to your ship on your own at chosen time.
